Should We in ChatGPT and Claude
Ask your chat “@ShouldWe battery” and it works out whether a battery would pay for your home in Australia, from your power bill, with the same calculation as this site. It asks one question at a time, then gives the battery size, the cost after rebates, the saving and the payback as ranges, with a link to the full report. It works out a business too, free.
Adding it
Paste https://shouldwe.com.au into the chat and ask it to add Should We. It reads the instructions on this site and adds the connection where it can (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the like), or tells you the one step. Should We needs no account and no sign-in. Its address is:
https://shouldwe.com.au/mcp
- Claude: in Settings, Connectors, add a custom connector with that address.
- ChatGPT: in developer mode, add it as a custom connector with that address.
- Claude Code: install the plugin, which brings the connection and a
/shouldwecommand, withclaude plugin marketplace add LukeDurrant/shouldwe-pluginthenclaude plugin install shouldwe@shouldwe.
Or paste this into Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and it adds Should We itself.
Using it
- Type “@ShouldWe battery”, “@ShouldWe electric car” or “@ShouldWe car insurance”, or ask “should we get a battery?”, “should we get an electric car?” or “should we change car insurance?”, with Should We turned on. It opens by saying what it is. For your home loan, type “@ShouldWe finance”, or ask whether to refinance or what you could borrow: it asks the questions the home loan page asks, one at a time. Just “@ShouldWe” asks which you want.
- Ask about your home and contents insurance renewal and it asks what the notice says, one question at a time, as the home insurance page does: the postcode, never the street or your name.
- It asks the same questions in the same order as the calculator on this site: whether it’s for your home or a business, whether the building is already up or a new build, then your latest bill (a photo or PDF, or the figures typed in), whose figures it reads back for you to confirm before it calculates. The bill’s plan says whether it’s a home or a business, and its supply address gives the postcode. No bill handy? It asks roughly what you pay instead.
- Then only what the bill doesn’t say: for a home, when you’re looking to install; for a business, what it does, its big equipment and whether a blackout would cost it money. A new build is asked about itself instead. You can skip the optional ones.
- You can also ask for the figures for a postcode: the electricity plans and their rates, the solar buyback, the federal and state battery rebates, and the virtual power plants open there.
What it can and can’t do
- It covers postcodes in Western Australia, regional Queensland, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory for now (the other states are coming). It reads a Synergy bill’s plan and the usage in each price period; a bill it can’t read works from the amount and the dates, so the range is wider.
- It works out homes and businesses, both free.
- Facts (prices, rebates, rules) come with their source. Estimates and assumptions are kept apart and say how they were worked out.
- It’s information, not financial advice. Check a quote with an installer before you buy.
- It only reads: it can’t sign you up, buy anything or change anything.
The tools
For anyone setting up a client. All three only read, and none needs a sign-in.
- battery: asks the next question, and calculates once it has enough. Start here.
- get_figures: the current figures for a postcode, each with its source. Open to everyone, businesses included.
- evaluate_battery: the calculation itself, for a client that already has the bill’s figures.
What it sends us
Your chat sends the figures it read from your bill and your answers, never the bill itself. We use them for the calculation and keep none of it. Our privacy policy has the details.
When something goes wrong
- The chat doesn’t use Should We: check it’s turned on for the conversation, then type “@ShouldWe battery”.
- The figures it read from your bill are wrong: say so when it reads them back, and give the right ones.
- It stops answering after many tries in one day: there’s a daily limit on calls from one address; try again tomorrow.
- The answer looks wrong: open the report link it gives you, which shows the working, and tell us what you expected.
